I would like to announce something very big that happened to me this past weekend...

I became an Auntie for the first time!

My brother Rick and sister in law Karen welcomed their precious baby boy, Cole Raymond Collins on January 22 at 10:02 pm. He was a tiny, but strong, fellow weighing 4 pounds 6 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. He is doing great!

I am so very happy for Rick and Karen and cannot wait to meeting baby Cole.

It has been tough to be so far away from them during such a special time.

Every time I'm out with my kids -- this seems to happen:
An older woman stops us, puts her hand over her heart and says something like, "Oh, Enjoy every moment. This time goes by so fast."
Everywhere I go, someone is telling me to seize the moment, raise my awareness, be happy, enjoy every second, etc, etc, etc.
I know that this message is right and good. But, I have finally allowed myself to admit that it just doesn't work for me. It bugs me. This CARPE DIEM message makes me paranoid and panicky. Especially during this phase of my life - while I'm raising young kids. Being told, in a million different ways to CARPE DIEM makes me worry that if I'm not in a constant state of intense gratitude and ecstasy, I'm doing something wrong.
I think parenting young children (and old ones, I've heard) is a little like climbing Mount Everest. Brave, adventurous souls try it because they've heard there's magic in the climb. They try because they believe that finishing, or even attempting the climb are impressive accomplishments. They try because during the climb, if they allow themselves to pause and lift their eyes and minds from the pain and drudgery, the views are breathtaking. They try because even though it hurts and it's hard, there are moments that make it worth the hard. These moments are so intense and unique that many people who reach the top start planning, almost immediately, to climb again. Even though any climber will tell you that most of the climb is treacherous, exhausting, killer. That they literally cried most of the way up.
And so I think that if there were people stationed, say, every thirty feet along Mount Everest yelling to the climbers -- "ARE YOU ENJOYING YOURSELF!? IF NOT, YOU SHOULD BE! ONE DAY YOU'LL BE SORRY YOU DIDN'T!" TRUST US!! IT'LL BE OVER TOO SOON! CARPE DIEM!" -- those well-meaning, nostalgic cheerleaders might be physically thrown from the mountain.
Now. I'm not suggesting that the sweet old ladies who tell me to ENJOY MYSELF be thrown from a mountain. These are wonderful ladies. Monkees, probably. But last week, a woman approached me in the Target line and said the following: "Sugar, I hope you are enjoying this. I loved every single second of parenting my two girls. Every single moment. These days go by so fast."

At that particular moment, Amma had arranged one of the new bras I was buying on top of her sweater and was sucking a lollipop that she must have found on the ground. She also had three shop-lifted clip-on neon feathers stuck in her hair. She looked exactly like a contestant from Toddlers and Tiaras. I couldn't find Chase anywhere, and Tish was grabbing the pen on the credit card swiper thing WHILE the woman in front of me was trying to use it. And so I just looked at the woman, smiled and said, "Thank you. Yes. Me too. I am enjoying every single moment. Especially this one. Yes. Thank you."
That's not exactly what I wanted to say, though.
There was a famous writer who, when asked if he loved writing, replied, "No. but I love having written." What I wanted to say to this sweet woman was, "Are you sure? Are you sure you don't mean you love having parented?"
I love having written. And I love having parented. My favorite part of each day is when the kids are put to sleep (to bed) and Craig and I sink into the couch to watch some quality TV, like Celebrity Wife Swap, and congratulate each other on a job well done. Or a job done, at least.
Every time I write a post like this, I get emails suggesting that I'm being negative. I have received this particular message four or five times -- G, if you can't handle the three you have, why do you want a fourth?

That one always stings, and I don't think it's quite fair. Parenting is hard. Just like lots of important jobs are hard. Why is it that the second a mother admits that it's hard, people feel the need to suggest that maybe she's not doing it right? Or that she certainly shouldn't add more to her load. Maybe the fact that it's so hard means she IS doing it right...in her own way...and she happens to be honest.
Craig is a software salesman. It's a hard job in this economy. And he comes home each day and talks a little bit about how hard it is. And I don't ever feel the need to suggest that he's not doing it right, or that he's negative for noticing that it's hard, or that maybe he shouldn't even consider taking on more responsibility. And I doubt anybody comes by his office to make sure he's ENJOYING HIMSELF. I doubt his boss peeks in his office and says: "This career stuff...it goes by so fast...ARE YOU ENJOYING EVERY MOMENT IN THERE, CRAIG???? CARPE DIEM, CRAIG!"

My point is this. I used to worry that not only was I failing to do a good enough job at parenting, but that I wasn't enjoying it enough. Double failure. I felt guilty because I wasn't in parental ecstasy every hour of every day and I wasn't MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY MOMENT like the mamas in the parenting magazines seemed to be doing. I felt guilty because honestly, I was tired and cranky and ready for the day to be over quite often. And because I knew that one day, I'd wake up and the kids would be gone, and I'd be the old lady in the grocery store with my hand over my heart. Would I be able to say I enjoyed every moment? No.
But the fact remains that I will be that nostalgic lady. I just hope to be one with a clear memory. And here's what I hope to say to the younger mama gritting her teeth in line:
"It's helluva hard, isn't it? You're a good mom, I can tell. And I like your kids, especially that one peeing in the corner. She's my favorite. Carry on, warrior. Six hours till bedtime." And hopefully, every once in a while, I'll add -- "Let me pick up that grocery bill for ya, sister. Go put those kids in the van and pull on up -- I'll have them bring your groceries out."

Anyway. Clearly, Carpe Diem doesn't work for me. I can't even carpe fifteen minutes in a row, so a whole diem is out of the question.
Here's what does work for me:
There are two different types of time. Chronos time is what we live in. It's regular time, it's one minute at a time, it's staring down the clock till bedtime time, it's ten excruciating minutes in the Target line time, it's four screaming minutes in time out time, it's two hours till daddy gets home time. Chronos is the hard, slow passing time we parents often live in.
Then there's Kairos time. Kairos is God's time. It's time outside of time. It's metaphysical time. It's those magical moments in which time stands still. I have a few of those moments each day. And I cherish them.
Like when I actually stop what I'm doing and really look at Tish. I notice how perfectly smooth and brownish her skin is. I notice the perfect curves of her teeny elf mouth and her asianish brown eyes, and I breathe in her soft Tishy smell. In these moments, I see that her mouth is moving but I can't hear her because all I can think is -- This is the first time I've really seen Tish all day, and my God -- she is so beautiful. Kairos.
Like when I'm stuck in chronos time in the grocery line and I'm haggard and annoyed and angry at the slow check-out clerk. And then I look at my cart and I'm transported out of chronos. And suddenly I notice the piles and piles of healthy food I'll feed my children to grow their bodies and minds and I remember that most of the world's mamas would kill for this opportunity. This chance to stand in a grocery line with enough money to pay. And I just stare at my cart. At the abundance. The bounty. Thank you, God. Kairos.
Or when I curl up in my cozy bed with Theo asleep at my feet and Craig asleep by my side and I listen to them both breathing. And for a moment, I think- how did a girl like me get so lucky? To go to bed each night surrounded by this breath, this love, this peace, this warmth? Kairos.
These kairos moments leave as fast as they come- but I mark them. I say the word kairos in my head each time I leave chronos. And at the end of the day, I don't remember exactly what my kairos moments were, but I remember I had them. And that makes the pain of the daily parenting climb worth it.
If I had a couple Kairos moments during the day, I call it a success.
Carpe a couple of Kairoses a day.
Good enough for me.

Valentines Day 2010

Yep, that is right...I am already thinking about Valentines Day!
I love Valentines Day--even though Chris thinks I am silly--there is something special about taking a day to celebrate the ones we love. Makes me smile.

I remember Valentines Day during elementary school so vividly...
we would all get to create a Valentine mailbox and bring it into class where, on Valentines Day, they would be filled with special notes from all our classmates. I remember the thrill of reading each one and the excitement I would feel if the boy I liked had written me one! (And the giddiness I would feel trying to analyze what he meant by, "Will you be my Valentine?" Or "I think you are sweet Valentine.") ha ha. I remember the little candy hearts, the pink and red decorations, the candies--it is all just wonderful.

I also remember at our high school for Valentines Day we were able to send and receive flowers from our Secret Admirers! I can honestly remember the happiness I felt when they would deliver the flowers and the anticipation I had hoping I would receive one!

It is little things like that that made Valentines Day fun for me. Small notes from my mom, candies, and flowers that made me feel loved and special.

So, I had this idea for our Valentines Day this year, and I do hope you'll participate! Lyla is finally at the age where she is understanding more about the holidays, and as you all know, she is quite the little artist so I thought why not make Valentines for some special friends? Lyla would love it and maybe they would bring a smile to your faces too. So, my thought was--if you would like to participate--please send a Valentine to Lyla (can be homemade or bought) and if you send us one we will send you one in return! Lyla and I will be making a Valentine's mailbox soon for all of her Valentines and as we receive them I will put them in there to keep til Valentines Day when she will get to open them up! Sounds like fun to me!

If you are able to send a Valentine's note through the mail that would be wonderful and much appreciated...but if you are only able to send via email, that is okay too! I will print them out on cardstock and tuck them in her mailbox. Please email them to annabumford@gmail.com. I hope you can make her Valentines a little more special and in return we can make yours a little more special too.

Lyla went to bed at 7pm, slept for the first time with no night terrors, until 8:50am!
She had a great nights sleep and is on the road to recovery!
We were even able to get her to eat some yogurt and part of a hotdog (cut up really tiny, which she told me tasted, "SOOOO GOOD) yesterday! Yay! I am so happy, you have no idea how much I have missed her spunky little spirit this past week. Hoping today continues to bring more positive milestones, one small thing at a time!

As for Landon, he also went to bed at 7pm and didn't wake til 9am--after taking a 5+ hour nap yesterday! Wowza, he must have needed it too! Mama needed it and is feeling like I could take on the world today!

Doctor said we have 6 more days to go before we are out of the contagious zone...fingers crossed and prayers being said!

Our long week...

Our poor little Lyla Pie has had quite a week with a really awful viral infection. It has dragged on and on. Let me fill you in...it all started on Monday when she started getting high fevers on and off...proceeded into Tuesday with more high fevers, lethargic behavior, and vomiting...continued to Wednesday where she welcomed more fevers, vomiting, and mouth pain--including a sore on her lower lip...straight into Thursday with more fevers and then I noticed her gums were incredibly swollen and red (so swollen in fact that I could hardly see her teeth!)...Thursday night she had her first ever night terror (which was quite a scary experience for Chris and I)...carrying forward to Friday with more mouth pain (now including bleeding gums, tongue sores, pain in teeth), on /off fevers, more lethargic behavior, 3 night terrors...advancing to Saturday when I thought ENOUGH IS ENOUGH when she had bleeding gums and still continued to lay on the couch unable to do anything for more than 10 minutes. She then began complaining of stomach pain. All the while, Lyla had not had ONE thing to eat since Monday--it was now Saturday and we all know how tiny she is. We were worried. I called our pediatrician who sent us straight to Phoenix Children's Hospital...

Once at the hospital, after waiting for what seemed like forever, they had to give her an iv due to dehydration. (We all knew that was coming, but it wasn't pleasant.) The nurse tried to get the iv in her left hand--but couldn't find the vein--so she had to go through the entire thing again with the right hand...and boy was it painful. They tried to numb her, unfortunately they said it just doesn't work for a very small percentage of children, Lyla is one of them. So...they fished around with that needle in her tiny hand, and it broke my heart. She was so brave.

and even though she felt terrible she still managed to flash me a smile--love her.

Finally, after she was no longer dehydrated and had had medicine, we were okay'd to take her home! She was happy to hear we could go home. It ended up that she has a severe viral infection that presented itself in very strange ways--and certainly every way possible. They threw around Herpangina and Stomatitis...but who knows. They said she is anemic, and showing keytones in her urine, but both of those things point to dehydration.

Yesterday, once home, we were able to get Lyla to eat a drinkable yogurt, thank goodness--it was the first thing she has ate since Monday! (And she was able to keep it down!) The poor little tiny is only 25 pounds, she doesn't have any weight to lose!

After 5 night terrors last night we had an appointment with our pediatrician this morning. We are praying she is on the way to recovery! We will more than likely be going back in on Wednesday if she has not turned the corner for more blood work. And most of all, we are praying her baby brother doesn't also have to go through any of this--we have been told it is highly contagious! Yikes. I have ran around here with Lysol, Lysol wipes, bleach, washing and sanitizing things like crazy--but we all know if he, Chris, or I are going to catch it we will. Clean house or not! (but cleaning does at least make me feel better.)

Speaking of Landon, while Lyla waited in the Emergency Room Landon explored the great outdoors...

It was beautiful out yesterday, I mean beautiful. 75 degrees of beauty. Lyla wanted to go to the park, but didn't have her best day behavior-wise, so unfortunately it was the only thing I could "take away" to turn her behavior around! So, the park wasn't an option...hey, there is always tomorrow! So, I decided on the next best thing--our backyard. We drew with chalk, blew bubbles, and filled our sand table with new sand. It was a lot of fun and I was able to catch some precious moments and sweet sandy faces.

Well, I have been meaning to write this post for a couple of days now...because I have thoughts bouncing around in my head like a racquet ball match! As I mentioned in my previous post, the new year to me is about resolutions, or goals, as I prefer to call them. It is a time I can think about the things in my life that are working, and a time for me to think about the things that are not. It is a time to begin a transformation in a sense. These are some of the reasons I get so excited about a clean fresh start.

Over the holidays I tend to go 100 mph and hardly have time to work on the things that mean the most to me, it is funny how that happens. I get so caught up in the gift giving, the traditions of Christmas, and the shopping (all which are very important) that I forget to slow down...

So, I take this time, once the bustle of the season is over to reflect upon my year ahead.

I am a person full of grand goals and this time of year they all seem to spill out wanting to be implemented...they come at me and reer themselves to the surface of my brain as if to say, "Anna--this is the most important thing you should be doing right now!" It gets stressful and downright difficult to even get started I tell you! Does anyone else feel this way? So first I need to look at the bigger picture. I need to start sorting out my mind, if you will. I need to create a plan, a list, a large goal for 2012. There are a million small goals that are flying through my mind all in various categories of my life, but I need to look at one umbrella goal if you will--and go from there. So, I will start with choosing one word that I hope to reflect my new year. One simple word that will help me in all aspects of my life. Now choosing that one word for your main goal is not an easy task...about 50 words go through my mind and say, "Choose me, choose me!" But this is important, this is the one word that will encompass my 2012, so it has to be a good one. And guess what friends, I chose my word! (I am sure you are all on the edge of your seats...)

My word for 2012 is,
PEACE.
Seem silly?
or does it not really make sense?

let me explain...
I feel scattered.
I feel a yearning to do better, work harder, be something more--all of which are like poison to who I am and what I am and what I am doing today. I dislike my constant internal voice that tells me I am not good enough and have not done good enough. Well, 2012 is my year baby. My year to be at PEACE with Anna. To be at PEACE with the person I am today--the mother, wife, daughter, friend, that I am today. No more, no less. 2012 is my year to stand on the mountain top and scream, "I AM GOOD ENOUGH because I am trying my best!" 2012 is my time to be proud of my small, minute, ordinary everyday accomplishments, and to remember that every new day is just gravy. With PEACE as my word I am ready to take on the smaller goals with a positive internal voice. I am ready to go to bed knowing that the day is done, I did my best, and I am at peace with that. And the larger blessing lies in that I can continue again tomorrow, God willing. How refreshing.

With this new peaceful mindset I am free to accomplish more and to be more. I am open to my possibilities. My smaller goals somehow seem more attainable knowing PEACE is on my side.

A list of some of my goals for 2012:
My Year of Peace.

Personal Goals:
Continue to print and organize photos into albums
Continue to journal weekly without restraint
Read many good books
continue to work out at least 4 times a week
Run a 1/2 Marathon
Paint monthly
stop biting my nails for good (I always fall into biting when I am stressed)
Organize all recipes
write and send, via mail, one letter per week
Create a budget and stick to it
No unnecessary spending
Continue to declutter my life and give things away
Family Goals:
Read at least 5 books a day with each child
Finish Lyla and Landon's baby books
Paint Lyla's room
Crafts with Lyla at least 3 times a week
Special time spent with Landon each day while Lyla sleeps (uninterrupted play time)
Lots of trips to the Park, the Zoo, and the Museum
Pick a wonderful school for Lyla (how is it that time)
Start Lyla in dance lessons
Start Landon in gym classes
Husband and Wife Goals:
Weekly date nights, even if they are spent at home
buy more games and play more games with Chris, instead of watching TV
continue conversing and working on our 5 year plan
I also have a list of private relationship goals that I hope to accomplish with Chris.
Faith based Goals:
Continue to go to church on Sunday
Begin weekly church classes starting in January
Continue to work on my relationship with God
pray pray pray
become involved with ministry
help Lyla be involved with our church

So, my friends, this is just the start.
I feel so eager and excited to get this year underway.
I will add goals as I think of them--because I tell ya, my mind never shuts off!

I hope you all had a very Happy New Year's Eve...ours was spent just how I like it with my best friend...the kids in bed, Chris cooking me a delicious lobster and tritip dinner, playing Scrabble, watching a Real Housewives marathon, and going to sleep by 10:30pm!

2011. A recap.

well my friends,
another year is coming to a close...
another beautiful, momentous, special year of my life,
come and gone.

I like the idea of a New Year.
A new start.
A fresh, clean slate...
to make it what you choose.

I am a sensitive soul...
someone who delights in possibilities,
who dreams, who plans, who believes.

I find the New year so inspiring,
and the older I get the more the New Year speaks to me.

I think about the year that has flown by me,
and reminisce about the days of past.
I laugh and cry remembering what my past 365 days have held.

most of all, I learn.
I learn to grow, to better myself, and to remember that everyday is a gift.

The let down after Christmas is hard.
Every magical moment leading from Thanksgiving to Christmas is so special to me.
The lights, the tree, the cookies, the fudge, the ornaments, the wrapping paper, the stockings,
Santa Claus, our Elf, the excitement--it is just all so wonderful.
Christmas is my time.
I soak it in, I let it overcome my being, and I try my best to bathe my children in the joy of the season.
And so, as one can imagine when Christmas day comes-- and flashes by in what feels like an instant--it can be a little upsetting.
But, I try to remember that with all endings their is a new exciting beginning.

Along with reminiscing over the past year I take time to think about what I have learned the past 52 weeks...

I learn a lot.
And so, without further adieu, some of the big things I have learned in 2011:

I have learned that I am really really hard on myself. Always have been. I will talk more about this in a coming post. But, I find that to be a constant place for growth in my life.

I have learned that nothing brings me more joy than Lyla and Landon...and I don't believe anything ever will.

I have learned that I am worth it. Whatever 'it' may be.

I have learned that I am not a door mat...and as I said in an earlier post, I have learned I can say, no and that it is okay.

I have learned that I can run.
And run far, no doubt.
And I have learned that with every run I better myself.

I have learned that when I set my mind to something I will accomplish it.

I have learned that I am full of amazing ideas and not so amazing at implementing them all! (Another thing to work on in the new year!)

I have learned that nothing feels as peaceful as being in Harmony. and that my mom and dad mean the world to me.

I have learned that sometimes things just don't work out how you planned them to. And come what may, there is usually a reason for that.

I have learned that after nearly 8 years together, Chris and I are wonderful at being a team, parents, friends, and lovers. I have learned that as I grow and change throughout my life, as I constantly do, Chris always accepts my growth and change, and still loves me.

I have learned that having friends is so important...and that understanding your friendships, each for their uniqueness, is just as important.

I have learned that there is still a lot I want to be, to do, to become.

I have learned that God is always there for me...
and that God knows me like no other and still loves me.

I have learned that religion is so important for me and my family.

I have learned that sometimes there can be a lot of obstacles standing in your way--but as long as you have people to love--the obstacles don't seem as insurmountable.

I look forward to 2012 and the endless possibilities it holds.
I bid a fine farewell to 2011,
a year of firsts and lasts.
In 2011 we lost my Grandfather, Wooley...
but also had joyous news in June of a brand new niece or nephew to come.
We celebrated Landon's first birthday, his first steps, and his first time sleeping through the night...
and we also celebrated a potty trained Lyla, a third birthday princess tea, and a first time going VBS without mommy.
We turned 32 and 28 (but don't look a day over 25)...
We celebrated a fabulous 5th anniversary together, with special friends, in Napa and San Francisco.
We found a church family and I renewed my personal vows to God.
We listened to a lot of Mumford and Sons, danced a billion times, had family movie nights, celebrated weddings with friends, and Baptized Lyla and Landon.
I took a million family photos...
I cried, and talked, and laughed, and sang...
We spent wonderful times with our families and created memories to last a lifetime.

Thanks 2011 for all the good times.
and Cheers to 2012 and the good times to come!

Last week we woke to a beautiful Winter Wonderland...

Everything looks so pretty with the freshly fallen snow.

We rushed outside, after throwing jackets over our pajama's, to take in all the beauty!

In all is chaos of packing for our trip, traveling to get to Colorado, and Christmas shopping a very exciting milestone took place...our little Landon turned 18 months old! I am in awe that he is a year and a half, it just sounds so big. I feel like we just celebrated his first birthday and here we are less than halfway done with his second year. It is mind blowing.

18 months is bittersweet.
I don't know why 18 months hits me so hard...it did with Lyla too.
I can't explain how my heart feels to have my baby become a toddler.
Don't misunderstand me please, growing, aging, progressing is what I pray for as a mother,
but every milestone is also one step further away from babydom.
One step further away from the time in my life that I know will rank the very highest.

You see, if you know me, I am a huge baby person. I love all the tiny clothes, the smell of newborns, the first's (smiles, laughs, word, steps, etc.) I love the cuddles, the innocence, the feeling of being needed. I love it all. I love it so much I soak it in--but only as much as one possibly can because before I know it, my teeny-tiny 5 pound baby is 18 months!
so yes, it is so bittersweet.

I love Landon with a passion.
I love him with every fiber of my being.
Landon is a doll baby, a gift from God in every sense of the word.
He is a joy. an absolute joy.
He makes me smile, and he makes me cry...honestly, if I think about him it brings tears to my eyes. (I am sure you mama's can relate!) I love him that much.
He is a little survivor, born so early yet so strong. I wasn't able to hold him for over 48 hours after his birth so once I finally could, I never wanted to let him go.
The sound of his laughter cannot be topped, his personality is calm and cool, and his face is just about the cutest face I think I have ever seen!

He is still an amazing sleeper--7 to 8:30. He loves to go to to bed and he loves to take his naps. He goes to bed happy and wakes happily and slowly. When he feels sleepy he is the first to say, "Night Night" and come over for me to put him in his crib. He sleeps with his wubby's (what we call his pacifiers), his Owl and Monkey blankies, and his Twinkle Star that sings him to sleep.

He is an amazing eater. A baby with quite the appetite. He loves basically all foods we give him and will always try new things. Having a baby that loves to eat--and loves to eat all varieties has been a blessing. He also still loves to drink milk--but also knows when Papa or I are drinking a Coke and always wants a sip! (Oh geez!)

He is an amazing dancer. Turn on the music and watch him go! He LOVES music and has music in his soul.

He is learning all the time! He says a lot of words and understands even more than I give him credit for sometimes! He does animal noises, sings (in his own words) the tune to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the Alphabet, and Calliou. He said "Love you" to me for the first time this past month--and of course, it melted my heart.

He loves to wrestle with Daddy and Papa--and even whacked a little kid in the face the other day at Gymboree. (I could not believe it, yet it was hilarious to me because he has never swatted my face, but he, Chris, and Papa always bonk each other and think it is funny!) I felt bad for the kid but will never forget that moment!

He still loves "using" all our cleaning supplies, scrub brushes, mops, brooms, vaccuums--just like his mama!
He loves playing with his Little People Farm and will sit quietly playing by himself for such a long time. It amazes me. He also enjoys"choo choos," cars, and balls, but will turn around and play with Lyla's necklaces, baby dolls, and stroller too! (I like to believe we are just helping him explore his feminine side!) Speaking of Lyla, she is the first person he calls for when he wakes up in the morning--and when she is napping he calls her name over and over and then says, "Shhh." He loves Lyla. She creates make-believe games for them and he follows her around like a sweet little lamb.

There is so much to mention about this precious little guy...
he says, "Mommy" so sweet that he could get away with anything (including swatting other kids!)
The face he makes when I am upset with him almost makes me forget why I was upset in the first place, it is that cute. (And once again, he can get away with anything when he makes that face!)
He is not much of a cuddler these days--too much to do and not enough time--but when he does want to cuddle I will drop everything to do so.

I guess it is safe to say, this 18 month old has me wrapped around his finger...and you know what,
that is exactly where I want to be!

Hello.

We are alive, and well.

We left Arizona on Friday at 7:15 pm and drove straight through the night arriving in Timnath, Colorado at 8:30 Saturday morning. The trip was pretty uneventful, which is just the way we like it! (Especially because it was our first big road trip to Colorado with the two kids!) Landon and Lyla started out the night bathed and in their jammies and then watched movies until falling asleep. Landon woke at 11 pm, and decided to talk for three hours on and off! It was hiliarious. I kept saying, "Landon, shhhh...it is night time." And he would just laugh! He then thought he should wake Lyla up, so he started saying her name over and over and took off her blanket...she did wake up long enough to tell him that it was time for him to go to sleep! We only stopped two times to get gas and continued on. The kids stirred both stops and whined a bit--but were back to sleep as soon as we hit the pavement again. By the time we got to Harmony both kids were awake and soaked through, haha, so we immediately (with the help of Grams) took them inside to a warm bath. Chris did a fabulous job driving the entire way--and never getting a moment of sleep! I was so proud of him, I however "tried" to get a few moments of sleep here and there...it was uncomfortable but sleep none the less. :) We are just happy to be here safe and sound.

Since arriving we have enjoyed spending time with mom and dad. Christmas came early for Chris and he and my dad went to the Patriots/Bronco game. Chris was like a little kid he was so excited--and even more so because his boys pulled off a victory! Another exciting thing to note, Chris won his Fantasy Football league this past weekend--so it is safe to say he is currently on cloud 9!

I have scurried around doing some last minute shopping...wrapping gifts...and working out. I am just so happy to be home for the holidays once again and I look so forward to a beautiful Christmas with my family!

I am in the mood to write.

To talk about what inspires me, what excites me, what keeps me going.

I know that I am just a mama, Lyla and Landon's mama no doubt, but to me that is the most important job I could ever have. And I feel inspired to write about my every-days as sort of a permanent archive for us to all look back on.

What inspires me today,

A "Good morning Mama" from Lyla, when Chris and I are still cozy in our bed. Lyla, our little burst of energy...runs into our room to start her day, and ours. Can't wake to anything better than that, especially when you are very tired, cold, and your bed feels just right!

A happy baby boy, who goes to sleep happy and wakes happy. Last night Chris and I looked down at him all comfy in his crib, with his wubby, a bottle, a cozy blanket...and all felt right in the world. He smiled and said, "Na night." Could we be any luckier?

A hot cup of coffee from our Keurig...or an afternoon spiced apple cider.

A long talk with a good friend. Talking about life and hopes and dreams...and being 100% myself. A feeling of validation and a quiet, "I know exactly what you mean." I don't know if it gets better than that.

Christmas cards mailed.

2 babies dancing every time music comes on...multiple dance parties everyday, and the assurance that I will always have someone to dance with.

A cuddle, an "I love you," and a smile that was needed.

Baking banana muffins with two 'old' bananas...and the smell that fills our home. yum.

Fridays and family weekends filled with sisters, and Santa, and painting, and gingerbread houses!

What a little beauty! She looks so grown up.

Today we are one day further away from Lyla's babydom...
and one day closer to having a big 4 year old! (4!?!?)
November 20th was Lyla's half-birthday!
How on earth did 6 months go by?
Didn't we just celebrate at her third birthday Princess Tea?

Isn't it incredible how the time flies, how quickly our children grow, how fast (if you blink you might miss it) our babies are no longer babies...
How bittersweet it is.

I often call her "my baby,"
and lately she has not allowed that.
Where yesterday it might not have phased her,
today that nickname is certainly not her.
No, to her she is a big girl, "No longer your baby girl" as she says.
I try to explain to her that she will always be my baby, as I am my mothers.
(Maybe still a tad too young to understand that concept!)

I see before me such a grown-up little 3 year old.
A little girl who does something new every day,
who excites in learning, who remembers everything,
and who says the darnedest things.

There are a million things I love about Lyla...for starters she has always always been well beyond her years. A smart cookie who wants to learn everything we will take the time to teach: writing, drawing, crafting, vocabulary, etc. She draws the cutest people now, they actually look like people! She writes her name beautifully, crooked A and all. She loves nothing more than to be read to--still. Anytime I am cleaning, she asks to help--and does a pretty good job! She can fold laundry with the best of 'em, thanks Grams! She loves to have her hair done and get dressed as soon as she wakes up in the morning--and lately a braided ponytail is her hair-do of choice!

Lyla still loves to cuddle with Chris and I...I am so thankful for that. She will sit and cuddle with us whenever we ask. She loves to watch movies for family movie night in mommy and daddy's bed! The other night she fell asleep on her Papa's lap, it was so sweet. Poor Papa couldn't move for hours.

She still amazes me with her sweet sisterly manner. She loves her baby Landon and tells him everyday. The first thing Landon does when he wakes up is says, "Lyla Lyla," She cuddles him, teaches him things (like how to say tree), and disciplines him when she feels necissary! haha. The two of them sure make their mama smile.

Lyla always asks me if I can take a picture of whatever it is she is doing...wonder where she got that from. If I say, "I don't have my camera," she will say, "take it with your phone." :) First thing she asks in the morning is, "Where are we going today?" She loves to go play at me gym, go to the park, and the zoo. She is also the first to volunteer if Daddy or I has an errand to run. She especially loves to go with Daddy to Fresh and Easy, so she can have her piece of gum (gun as she calls it.) She never gets gum from me, ever. She loves to dance and asks me all the time if I want to see her moves. haha. Her favorite move is what she eloquently titled, "The Bummy Dance." (You can imagine!) She loves to be a pea-body (naked or only in undies) still. It is cute now, but hopefully she will grow out of this phase soon!

She is confidant, happy, and sensitive.

Her favorites at present include:

any type of dress

She calls this Gorilla, "Grandpa."

Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers...
My wish for you is that you had a day full of yummy food, relaxation, and the people around you that make you smile, whether that be family or friends.

I am thankful daily for the things in my life...
but I would like to share my current list of gratitude with you.
So, in no particular order...

Today I am especially thankful for:

Letting go.
I am thankful for learning more about myself every year.
And I am thankful for becoming more of the person I strive to be every day.
I am thankful that I am learning about my needs, my wants, my hopes, and my dreams even at age 28.
And I am thankful that I will always continue learning as the years pass.

I am thankful that God has placed people in my life to help guide me on my journey...
and I am thankful that with these people in my life I am understanding what I want and don't want more than ever before. I am thankful for the ability to constantly evolve...and thankful that I have many special people in my life that encourage me to evolve.

I am thankful for learning to say no this year, more than any year prior.
I am thankful for gut-feelings, intuition...and for following my heart.
I am thankful for believing in myself and knowing that no matter what it is that I believe, Chris will continue to believe in me too.

Speaking of Chris, I am thankful for a constant, unwavering companion...a cheerleader, a hard worker, and someone to always keep me laughing. And above all, I am thankful for a true-to-the-core, loyal, best friend I will always have in him, and he in me. How amazing is that?

I am thankful for my ability to run, for the fire that running has lit in my soul--and the accomplishment I feel after every single run. I am thankful that my body is so strong and that even when my mind has given up, my body forges on. I am thankful that every week I log more miles...and every week I can pat myself on the back. I am thankful for this girl whom 6 weeks ago would have said, "I am not a runner." Well, Anna...look who can run now! I am thankful for the songs that inspire me, the wind in my face, and the electricity I feel when I have ran further than I ever thought I could.
I am above all thankful for the pride I feel in myself.

I am thankful for my ability to create...whether it be a painting, a meal, or an organized home. I am thankful that there is always something to do--and always ways to improve myself and my surroundings.

I am thankful for my children...for their smiles, their giggles, and their unconditional love. I am thankful that they are here to keep me going, to dry my tears, and to lift my spirits. I am thankful that to them I am always more than enough. Lyla and Landon are my greatest gift and I am so thankful that God entrusted me to be their mother.

I am thankful for my own mother. I am thankful for her constant companionship, our endless hours of conversation, and our understanding. I am thankful that of all the mothers, she is mine.

I am thankful for my father. Thankful that he makes me smile and incredibly thankful for the ability to watch him play with my children. I am thankful for the kisses he gives Landon, the hugs he gives Lyla, and the things he teaches to both of them.

I am thankful for my brother. Thankful that even with the space between us we will remain close. I am thankful that I will soon be an aunt, and that my children will have a cousin. I am thankful that Rick sits on the floor and plays with Lyla and Landon...reads to them, lets them color on his face, and builds towers with them. They are so lucky that he is their uncle.

I am thankful for all of the love I have in my life. I am thankful that I have always known love and that I am able to show that love to my children. I am thankful for my mother in law, my father in law, and my sister in laws.

I am thankful for hot baths, inspirational quotes, and a cup of hot apple cider. I am thankful for cozy blankets, open windows, yummy scented candles, prayers, finding the perfect outfit, and sunflowers. I am thankful for crockpots, butterflies, classical music, my camera, and a glass of pinot grigio. I am thankful for God's word, finishing a run, fountain Cokes, and a clean house. I am thankful for The Food Network, hugs, clean babies, and reading a good book.

Above all that I am thankful for every day I have with my family.
I am thankful that we have a cozy home, food in the refrigerator, and beds to sleep in.

My list could go on and on,
I have so many things to be grateful for...

I hope that today you took a moment to be grateful.

Sorry it has been a while and I have yet to update the rest of our San Francisco trip...but I would love to do so now. The photos are too fun not to share and I would love to have the memories written for a reminder in years to come.

This was our first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge...on a beautiful rainy drive to San Fran.

After we got settled at our various hotels, Chris and I went to Pier 39 to take a water tour of the bay!

Our Children's Baptism...

Today Lyla and Landon were baptized at our church, Deer Valley Lutheran.
It was such a wonderful and special time, and I feel so blessed that they were baptized into the family of God.

Grams and Papa were here to celebrate the special occasion!
Landon couldn't sit through the entire hour church service...so luckily Papa took him to play in the nursery.

Lord surround these children in goodness,
lead them in Your light each day.
Help them walk the path You've chosen
guide their steps along the way.
Teach them Lord to trust Your wisdom
with a faith forever new;
Keep them from all harm and bless them
with Your grace and gladness too!

My brother and sister in law came to town and I was anxious to take some maternity photos of her expanding belly! Luckily, they agreed!
Of course, Lyla and Landon were with us and snuck in a couple...

and Landon just wanted me to hold him!

Karen and Rick, you both look great and it was a joy to capture some memories of my little neice/nephew-to-be!

last week the kids and I went to the Desert Botanical Gardens and had a lovely picnic and enjoyed the butterflies. It was such a wonderful day...and I love these photos. I think it is so special spending time with my kids and exploring new things.
Landon was very excited about the butterflies this trip,
and we look forward to going again soon!

This time of year they have Monarch butterflies.

Lyla kept wanting to touch the butterflies,
she was so gentle.

On Saturday we went to Grant's 7th Birthday Party...
Landon was obsessed with this cute, glass, lab puppy.
He loves dogs.
Loves them.
And has absolutely no fear of them when we are out and see one.
(the complete opposite of his sister.)
Well, this poor puppy didn't stand a chance--
and broke on the tile!?!
I could have died.
Katie's sweet mama has had this puppy since I was a child,
for as long as I can remember.
And now the doggy has no legs, no bone!
Oh lord.
heck, at least we have this above photo...
Landon looks so grown up and happy.
